Community Soccer Field Rehabilitation

As part of its efforts to improve local soccer infrastructure, OA helps to rehabilitate existing soccer fields.  Following a community-based field selection process, the rehabilitation involves the field’s owners (who provide access), local partners (who provide support), and the community at large (who provide guidance and support).

A local engineer and labourers are hired to complete the rehabilitation through a number of steps.  First, the playing surface is leveled and flattened by heavy machinery or a team of hired local labourers, or a combination of both. Then, the necessary soil is laid and drought resistant grass is planted once enough rain has fallen.  Goal posts are built and installed, and a perimeter fence is put in place to protect the field.  Finally, native trees are planted to reduce erosion and provide shade for the field and its users.  When possible, fruit trees are used in order to provide a source of healthy food for the community or school and a source of income in community-building activities.  Once the rehabilitation is complete, one or two local field attendants  are hired to ensure that the field,  goal posts, fencing, and  trees are all protected and well maintained.
