Yo Guys,
Here it is: the first of many to come.
Dunc and I arrived at the Entebbe International Airport (Uganda) at 10am local time — after 17hrs of flights and 11 hrs of waiting in the Amsterdam and Nairobi airports — to a very warm and sunny climate.
We caught a cab to Kampala and arrived at our guesthouse completely jet-lagged and disoriented but very excited about what was next.
We spent the rest of day getting oriented to the bustling city, which consisted of drinking Ugandan coffee and eating avocados (pronounced avo-kay-dos), and riding on the back of boda-bodas (a motorcycle taxi), before meeting up with Mubiru Tonie (Tonie).
Tonie runs a band program for an orphanage that he founded (see previous post). This band not only performs to raise money for the boys’ schools fees but also has great popularity in the city, as a innovative program that brings boys off of the street and into an environment where they develop a sense of self-worth and a belief in their own potential as individuals (something akin to OA’s goals).
We spent the night meeting the boys, checking out the orphanage, and having our first Ugandan dinner. I had the beef soup with mashed/cooked plantains (matooke), while Dunc had what turned out to be fish, and matooke.
After finishing the last bite of our well-portioned meal, we had our first sleep under our mosquito nets.
