Project Little Victories — inspirational story

Gavin writes about an inspirational overseas project started by a friend of ours.

A good friend of mine from UVic, and a long time supporter of Opportunitas Aequa, Chelsea, has started an incredibly worthy project with the GiveMeaning Foundation, in Vancouver.

In January, 2007, Chelsea went to Kampala, Uganda, to volunteer primarily as a computer literacy teacher in a continuing education program for senior Ugandan health administrators.

During her time there, she came across the Mengo Bakuli Boys’ Brigade — an orphanage for about 40 boys ranging in ages 8-17. She started to hang out with the boys, playing soccer with them, giving group lessons on topics such as HIV/AIDS awareness, and spending a lot of one-on-one time with them.

When she returned to Vancouver, last fall, the strong bond that she had built with the boys had not faded, and she decided that she wanted to continue her support for them.

Using GiveMeaning’s online platform, Chelsea started Project Little Victories, which is designed to raise money to cover the cost of the boys’ school fees.

Chelsea says watching OA make strides has, in part, helped inspire her to continue to take action:

“Through watching the progress that OA has made, I realized just how feasible it is for anybody to make a real difference in the world. I cannot create universal free education, but I can try to raise enough money to keep a couple of these boys in school.

I strongly believe that there are many good people in the wealthier regions of the world who genuinely want to help but feel like the problems in the Developing World are too big and out of their hands.

I started Project Little Victories with the idea that so little to one means so much to another, and, with a relatively small amount of effort here, I can make a huge difference in the lives of those boys!”

I strongly encourage you to visit the project page at GiveMeaning, read more about the project and her story, AND, if you are at all inspired by what she is trying to do, then donate just $5.

This is first of many more inspiring stories that we will share with you. And, we encourage anyone to send us personally-meaningful and inspirational stories.

Until the next one,

Gav
